Tír na nÓg

Permaculture Smallholding, County Mayo, Ireland

Tír na nÓg is a Permaculture smallholding in County Mayo, with a 400 year old cottage currently under complete renovation, and acre and a half of land that needs a bit of work too…

As of January 2017, after 18 months of very hard work, the rush and heather thatch has all been composted (it was hidden under the tiled roof!) and most of the concrete render on the walls has gone, along with all of the very dodgy electrics and all the plumbing. The main room has been re-pointed with lime mortar, the windows replaced, sheeps wool insulation fitted, a 6’2″ wide fireplace discovered under the cement and opened up, the chimney lined and the stove fitted. (Just all the plumbing, fitting the solar hot water and underfloor heating, electrics, lime hemp plastering, ceilings, kitchen, bathroom and moving in to be done…)

Outside much work has also been done on clearing the land of brambles and rushes, creating a veg patch, re-roofing, painting and guttering the beautiful stone sheds, planting fruit and nut trees and windbreaks, digging ponds, installing French drains, and a land drain, and creating a tree bog composting toilet and installing and planting a horizontal flow grey water reed bed.

Current residents at Tir na nOg are Claire, Erin the whippet, Reggie, Mercedes and Lady Mary the cats, Ailish the goat, 4 runner ducks, 2 hives of bees, 7 ex-battery hens and Barry the Welsummer rooster.
